Asye and Hakim recently adopted their one year old son Reece who has additional needs.
“Our son has a medical diagnosis called Spina Bifida, and as a result we were told that there is a high chance he will need a wheelchair. It is not a condition in which we had experience, but when we saw our Reece’s photo, we wanted to learn more about him. After consulting with a paediatrician, we felt we would be able to provide for his needs.”
Ayse said “Adopting a child with additional needs of course has its difficulties; there are many hospital appointments we must attend and be very vigilant and aware of any changes in his health. However, watching Reece grow and develop at his highest potential is most rewarding.”
“There are many changes we have had to make, however this has now become second nature over time.”
“Reece is a very content, giggly and alert little bundle of joy, who surprises us every day! Since moving to our home, he is thriving and has a smile that lights up our world. The support from professionals and our family and friends has been enormous and has made a huge difference to our lives.”
“The firm belief of my daughter, husband and me is that all children should have a loving family and this led us to adopt” said Asye.
“Our advice to prospective adopters is to keep your options open as you don’t know with which child you are going to fall in love with. Every child in care needs a loving and nurturing home regardless of their ethnicity or additional needs they may have.”
